As the end of the semester nears, concern begins to grow in the backs of the heads of graduating students about what they’re going to do after walking across the stage.
Some may have jobs lined up already but there are just as many who don’t have a plan yet.
To better understand what employers are looking for in those ready to enter their professional careers, 270 Stories took a visit to the Murray State University Career Expo.
So what did we find out?
Employers value soft skills like communication, leadership and a good attitude towards their work above all else.
“Those things seem simple and we take them for granted, but they go a long way with people that we’re looking to bring into our team,” said Evan Gibson, Nucor Steel, Arkansas.
“We’re always looking for those that come in and are ‘stand-outs,’” said Tevita Falahola, Parker Hannafin. “Confidence, they can articulate well their experience. We know that they’ll flourish in any setting for us.”
“Strong work ethic, strong communication skills,” said Tracy Kayhanfar, Conagra Brands. “Your schooling is your schooling, but having some of those other traits I think are really important.”
Additionally, the professionals present shared some tips on how graduates can better prepare themselves for their futures.
“We’re always looking for someone to give a chance to,” Falahola said. “Stop in and just play the numbers. Talk to as many people as possible, even if it’s just to get comfortable.”
“Find somebody who can mentor you, that can help you be successful. Oftentimes we have these ideas of grandeur, but we don’t always know how we can accomplish these things,” Gibson said. “You want to make sure you can find somebody that you trust and that you can communicate with and help guide you in whatever company or area you decide to go into.”
“I was caught off guard with the level of responsibility I was given early on. That was both really rewarding yet really scary in the same sense,” Kayhanfar said. “My advice would be to take advantage of the opportunities. You’ll do great. Prove yourself and that’s how you’re going to progress throughout your career.”
So what’s the takeaway? What can we do?
Be ourselves. Trust what we’ve learned so far. We’ve already done the hard part, now we just do the rest.
