Meet the 270 Stories staff

On Dec. 10, 2021 an EF4 tornado roared through northwest Tennessee and far western Kentucky. The fall 2022 JMC 597 Collaborative Journalism Capstone is working as 270 Stories to shed light on the recovery efforts in Mayfield, Kentucky.

Emery Wainscott, executive editor

Emery Wainscott is Executive Editor of 270 Stories. Emery chose the journalism route because she has a passion for helping others and writing. As a member of the 270 Stories team Emery is looking forward to shining a light on the recovery efforts in Mayfield, Kentucky after the Dec. 10, 2021 tornado. When she isn’t doing work for 270 Stories Emery is the Chief Copy Editor for The Murray State News and a web editor for WPSD Local 6. Beyond journalism Emery enjoys rollerblading and writing creative nonfiction.

Connor Capito, assistant editor

Connor Capito is the Assistant Editor of 270 Stories. Connor chose the journalism route because of his love for sports and writing and wanted to combine them. As a member of the 270 Stories team Connor wants to bring in some insight as to how tornado recovery works and how long lasting it can be. When he isn’t doing work for 270 Stories, Connor is recording games and writing features for Racer Athletics. Beyond journalism Connor enjoys playing video games and listening to his favorite rapper Lil Baby.

Rachel Essner, social media director

Rachel Essner is the Social Media Director of 270 Stories. Rachel chose the journalism route when she realized that English education was not the path for her, but she still wanted to apply her writing skills. As a member of the 270 Stories team Rachel is looking forward to using newer social media media forms, such as TikToks, to educate others and tell a story. When Rachel isn’t doing work for 270 Stories she enjoys playing intramural sports, especially volleyball, and taking care of her 8-month-old puppy.

Dionte Berry, social media director

Dionte Berry is the social media director of 270 Stories. Dionte chose the journalism route because he found it to be a culmination of many things he loves: writing, photography and design. As a member of the 270 Stories team Dionte is looking forward to shining a light on an ongoing recovery that isn’t getting the total coverage it deserves. When he isn’t doing work for 270 Stories, Dionte is the Editor-in-Chief of The Murray State News. Beyond journalism, Dionte is an avid listener of Charli XCX and enjoys cracking jokes.

Dustin Wilcox, creative services

Dustin Wilcox is the Creative Services Producer for 270 Stories. Dustin chose the journalism route because he was aiming to be paid for his writing and journalism seemed like the most logical route. As a member of the 270 Stories team Dustin is looking forward to finding creative ways to share Mayfield, Kentucky’s recovery story following the Dec. 10, 2021 tornado. When he isn’t doing work for 270 Stories, Dustin is a reporter at WKMS and has his own blog, Wilcox Arcade. Beyond journalism Dustin enjoys listening to Taylor Swift and Asking Alexandria.
